Consultation
The consultation is an essential part of a professional treatment. I will need to take details of your lifestyle and medical history from you. This is to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment and that there are no contraindications or cautions to treatment. It also gives you time to ask any questions.
Contraindications - what are they?
Holistic treatments such as Reflexology and Indian Head Massage are not high risk and are generally safe for most people. However, there are some medical conditions as to why treatment may not be given or why treatment may need adjusting on a localised area, or why treatment may only be given after you have sought approval/advice from your G.P. If you are receiving treatment from your doctor for a medical condition it is advisable to obtain his or her advice before having any complementary therapies and you will need to sign that you have been approved for treatment.
Before a treatment can commence, you will be asked to give a medical history as part of the initial consultation (please note this is treated with the strictest confidence under the Data Protection Act) and to sign a consent form stating that you have given the necessary information.
Indian Head Massage example contraindications include:
Head lice, infectious/contagious conditions (e.g. cold sores), open wounds or major bruising in treatment region, current migraine - treatment can only commence when these have been cleared up.
Cancers (particularly bone/lymph), diabetes, epilepsy, osteoporosis, arthritis or injuries in upper torso/spine including whiplash (again I will inform you of others during initial consultation) - these may need advice from your G.P./specialist and I will require you to sign a further consent form.
