Aftercare Advice

Following your massage or reflexology session you will be asked if you would like to stay on the chair/couch for a few minutes and only get up when you feel ready and with care as you may feel a little lightheaded.

After your treatment your muscles will feel less tight, you will feel more relaxed and you may feel slightly floaty. Your circulation will be improved.

After the treatment, it is adviseable to:
  • drink more water for the next 24 hours – this helps to rehydrate tissue including muscles and also aids elimination

  • wind the window down if you are driving back from your appointment to ensure you get fresh air and improve concentration

  • eat a light snack to feel more grounded and only eat light meals for the next 12 hours

  • avoid stimulants, alcohol and caffeinated drinks, if you can, for at least 12 hours after (preferably 24 hours)

  • avoid tobacco and smoking if you smoke or drink for at least 12 hours

  • avoid heavy and overly strenuous exercise – your muscles need time to rest after a therapy session

  • ensure you get some rest or a good night’s sleep at the earliest opportunity

  • use cold water bursts contrasting with your regular shower temperature the next day to help circulation to the soft tissue that has been worked on

  • if you have had a muscle ache/condition for a long time then you may find gentle heat such as from a warm bath, using a warm hot water bottle or wheat bag can help

  • take an Epsom salt bath to help relax (please note that soaking in bath salts does not help you absorb magnesium but it can help with relaxation and soothing the skin)

  • take as much rest as you can over the next 24 hours and relax (if you can have a nap then do so)

  • do not go swimming for 12 hours if you have had Ear Candling

  • if you have been given a treatment with an aromatherapy or therapeutic carrier oil, then it is best to leave the oil on for at least 12 hours to allow it to be absorbed (use a towel on your pillows to stop the oil going through) and maximise on their benefits.  For washing oiled hair, first apply your shampoo onto the hair, and then the water and then shampoo as normal.

  • if you have received Aromatherapy please do not use other products on your skin, as they may interact, until you have washed.

  • avoid strong sunlight or sunbeds if you have received aromatherapy especially with citrus type essential oils as they are photosensitising in UV light.

  • practice selfcare suggestions between sessions

Contra-actions

Some clients may experience emotional or physical release symptoms during or after a treatment.  These are called contra-actions.

Emotional symptoms release may include:

  • laughing/giggling

  • crying/tearfulness

Physical symptoms release may include:

  • reddening of the skin called erythema (this is due to increased circulation)

  • light bruising

  • more frequent bowel and urine elimination as your body’s metabolism increases

  • lightheadedness

  • headaches

  • occasionally mild cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose for the 24 hours following treatment

  • feeling more tired (most people report that they have a really deep sleep the night following a treatment)
